Marcus and Sam have been together for more than twenty years. For the past two years, though, Sam has been battling an aggressive cancer that has left her suffering and bedridden. To escape the pain of her illness, she enters a simulation of an alternate reality, affectionately called Sam’s World. Developed by the couple with the help of their friends, it uses a technology called the SynAPP, which links with the participant’s hippocampus to generate a virtual world in their mind. There Sam lives in a gritty fantasy world, experiencing life free from her current physical limitations, where she and Marcus interact together as though nothing has changed. But as Sam’s cancer progresses, and her prognosis grows more dire; Marcus experiments with Sam’s World, hoping it might hold the key to her survival.
